What is an NFT?
An NFT (non-fungible token) is part of the recent cryptocurrency craze. Each cryptocurrency has an online ledger of all transactions, called a blockchain. The blockchain is similar to a physical ledger: you can look up any transaction and see details about it (who participated, how much cryptocurrency was involved, date, time, etc.). An NFT creates a transaction record in the blockchain, but the record describes ownership of a digital item. The NFT record contains a URL where the item resides and other info, such as current and former owners. When you buy an NFT, you are buying the contents of the URL plus the right to put your name in that ownership field. Some NFTs, like mine, also come with unique physical objects, like vinyl records. Artists have taken to creating digital art and selling it as an NFTs. Some NFTs have fetched millions of dollars at auction, but most sell for more modest sums, prices you might pay for a painting you see hanging in an art gallery or coffee shop.
Why did I create NFTs?
In my case, I've created a very small number of vinyl copies of 'Ohio River City,' and I want to sell them in a special way. I also have songs that didn't make it onto 'Ohio River City' that I think are important to share. Finally, I wanted to go through the process of creating an NFT. I've found it to be quite fun. There are unique challenges to releasing an NFT (around security, authenticity, and file integrity), which I've enjoyed solving. An NFT is a breadcrumb, something to say 'I was here', similar to graffiti or etching initials into a beech tree.
Where are the NFTs sold?
My NFTs are hosted on OpenSea.io, a website dedicated to hosting NFTs and selling them.
How can I listen to the NFTs?
Listen to the NFTs on OpenSea.io. Find links to the NFTs under the NFT tab.
How can someone purchase my NFT?
I have created two NFTs. Click on the link to each one under the NFT tab. You will need an OpenSea.io account and some Ethereum in your cryptocurrency wallet to purchase. Again, listening is free and is available in your browser.
